Meditation

The sky of blue an ocean when I close my eyes
And count the waves that lap in front of me
With breaths that reach as deep as ocean’s floor,
Hypnotic rhythm in and out; serenity.

The salty air I taste upon my tongue,
Dream of solitude within the halo’s white.
Centered in my mind, my thoughts are cleared;
I wait for you to speak, I see the light.

  1. I couldn’t agree more with you on this. The water is where I usually find my peace too. Lovely imagery Laurie.

  2. oh i love this….i love going to the ocean…it is there i often find my rhythm again….did not make it this summer and i feel that a bit….maybe soon…

  3. What peaceful thoughts here, Laurie. I love the solitude of looking out into the expanse of ocean….for me there is nothing more beautiful than this. Yes, I see the light too.

    I love the endless flow of the ocean… always bringing in new thoughts and dreams.

  6. the sea is one of the most beautiful “metronomes” for finding our rhythm to meditate and get lost in those quiet moments…beautiful…

    My Melva and I visit the ocean on Washington’s coast often, and we stand near the edge, close our eyes, letting the chakra colors drench us, going to that red room filled with golden light; great poem.

  8. The tide rises, the tide falls . . . and so meditation brings you to teh sea and sea to meditation . . . . it is so perfect! I love the halo where eyes used to be, the hypnotic counting, the waiting . . .

  9. Funny, most readers saw it as escaping to the ocean — I saw all the ocean metaphors for the meditating experience of breath and waves of thought etc…

  10. Centered in my mind,
    my thoughts are cleared;
    I wait for you to speak,
    I see the light.

    This can double as a prayer. Meditation can very well bring out the light to offer solace to the gratitudes. Nice thoughts Laurie!

  14. A classic image for calm. It’s in a book based on calm techniques so it must be true!

  15. Lovely, Laurie. I love the rhythm of this poem, it’s a classic. But you’ve managed to combine a consistent rhythm and rhyme with a message in the words that is clear, so much so that I didn’t consciously notice the rhyme until I deliberately looked for it.

  16. I wait for you to speak; I see the light…simply wow!!! Love the rhythm, the sea, the blueness, and the salt air…very evocative!

  17. Beautiful Laurie, love ‘salty air I taste upon my tongue’, just beautiful …

  18. I love the rhythmetic sound of this!

  19. In meditation, all experiences are ours…within… Love “I see the light” at the end…beautiful, Laurie.

    All I can think about when I try to meditate is whether I left the coffee pot turned on–I am crappy at it–I do like to just sit and stare into space sometimes though. I love the sense of peace here,Laurie, so beautifully drawn.

  21. i love the calming rhythm of this piece, Laurie. i’m always telling my daughter {and myself} to take a moment to close her eyes and just breathe. beautifully written!

  22. Meditation can bring many wonderful experiences…it’s solitude but you are in good company with yourself… nicely put…
