You asked me to bring a lighter,
two rolls of paper towels when I
dropped him off; camping’s not much
fun without each one- how could you
forget such things? I hesitIT-ATEd –
letting him come, my little one, after
a slumber party just last night when
at five o’clock he still went strong
as the wild pigs chasing after me, Bill
said to hurry, climb a tree and before I
knew it a herd passed beneath my feet,
when I plopped down he said “Be quiet
you’ll scare the deer away!” and all I
wanted was to go to sleep.
My little one will crash right after dinner, but
that’s okay. I’ll let someone else handle it.

Village Creek State Park is nestled in the backyard of the town where I used to teach, not but fifteen miles from where I live. My husband and older son were already there for a scout camping trip when I dropped off my youngest this morning. It brought back memories.
I had a “friend” who used to hunt and I once went with him thinking how nice it would be since I love nature and all. Little did I know wild boars would chase me up a tree. I did write a funny short story about it here, if you’re interested.

smiles…a camping trip can be quite adventurous with lots of unexpected things to happen..i haven’t climbed a tree for a while..wonder if i would get there quick enough…smiles
Kids sure are exhausting… as is camping! Lots of fun Laurie.
That was a close call….I agree, a lot of unexpected things can happen during camping ~
Camping brings all kind of adventure – we once had a bear outside our tent – awful = the pigs sound bad – your little one will have fun! Very cute poem. k .
I used to love going camping in my teens and early 20′s. After that my bones didn’t like the hard ground anymore and preferred a mattress. LOL
Being chased up a tree sounds like a hoot, if those boars weren’t so bad tempered. They can do quite a bit of damage. Yikes.
My goodness, a herd of wild pigs….that would be quite frightening indeed and definitely UNEXPECTED!
Wild pigs! No camping for me. I like my bacon in packets
So cool your husband and sons are camping……a tad scary about the wild boars. We just have cougar and bears to worry about up here. And angry moose!
Exactly the reason I feel roughing it should be in hotels with bad room service! Great fun to read- K
Another reason I don’t like camping…wild pigs!
oh geeze! boars are scary beasts…
nicely done
Gotta watch out for those wild piggies…! Love the contrast between the adult and the child’s perspective.
Unexpected happenings can be a thrill or a bother when on camping trips. Once it rained heavily and rivulets of water passed by our butts. Another time when the river level rose and we had to flee to higher ground. Wonderful write, Laurie!

Camping can give stories to live off for years to come!
Hubby’s a hunter…and I’m the one that cries when he catches a fish…so you can imagine me when it’s big and furry. Is it wrong to say I would love to see HIM chased up a tree…maybe bring him over to my team for a bit in that regard..I am a fan of camping, however…and shooting wildlife with my camera
Loved this Laurie…and yes thank you…I’d love to read the story.
haha….boy this took me back a bit…smiles….so much fun at that age…we would stay up all night and have a blast…and scare ourselves silly as well…oy, it will catch up to him…and he will crash…smiles….
Good poem Laurie … I went and read your hog story at “Dead Mule” too – scary, what? I’ve heard they can be pretty nasty – good thing you got up a tree! Glad your young one’s going to camp … I remember that as being fun too!
Wild boars can be found in the reserves here, every now and then they appear in parks — I think a jogger got chased once.
Like this amusing poem. I love nature, but I’m not sure if I’m into camping anymore.
While we’re on the boars, there are radioactive wild pigs running amok in Germany. They ate truffles contaminated by Chernobyl all those years ago and, as they matured, started stampeding restaurants. Talk about wanting to climb a tree!
Laurie, I can relate to the mother part of this, interrupted by a past incident. Practicality vs. whimsical memory…. who always wins? The part that will make a good poem! Whimsy on, girl. Amy

nice, Laurie!!
i enjoyed your telling, Laurie!
there are wild havelinas {similar to wild boar} that eat the pumpkins she sets outside her front door for Halloween. i can’t imagine having to climb a tree to avoid a herd of them!
i hope you have a lovely Sunday.
♥
Love the title, works on so many levels … really like the ‘Bill’ character, how cool is he just saying not to disturb the deer when you’ve nearly been eaten by wild boars?!
Laughing! The background info meant everything in understanding your poem. THanx
Wow, pigs abound this week
Like this loads!
great story!
