dessert

Red Room murder, death by
chocolate, or perhaps
suicide when faced
with a tray of dessert
on your left side,

the side that should have left
its nose on the barstool
to be crushed, vanilla wafers
(plus a shot or two of vanilla)
or beaten half/naf flan, your key

to will-power with a mile twist
of lime might just save yourself
another bite of neck-up hype,
a silly gripe when pants pop

open to get a fill
oh, the thrill–
dessert can be murder.

Poetic inspiration~ dVersePoets: Meeting the Bar: Creativity where Anna has us experimenting with flow and u-turns in creativity. Funny that I really was “off” earlier today. This picture of a dessert tray sparked my creativity. I started playing with the words, spelling them backward, and ended up with this.

  6. beaten half/naf flan….haha that is so fun to say….

  7. fun! the last four lines especially clever. and how apt a theme for those new-year’s-resolution-weight-loss types. :)

  8. Glenn Buttkus

I hear you, sister. So far though, my New Year’s (annual) resolution for eating less, weighing less, is still working, still extant. Will this be the year I shed the 50 lb. monkey on my chest? Wish me luck as I smile at your poetics.

  9. Oh my! What a visually delightful and verbally delicious take on the prompt. Only now I want dessert!!!

  10. haha…way cool..and yummy…smiles…i want a dessert now…smiles

  16. Love this! The flow is dangerously perfect! Heh

  17. I prefer not to be tempted!! (But often am.) Everyone has their downfall, I guess.

  18. I prefer not to be tempted, though I often am! What a wickedly wonderful write.

    brilliant x

I don’t know, I don’t think I’d mind such a dearth too much. in this case it seems that delicious plate of dessert killed your creative-block.

  21. Oh my… Wonderful word riff…. And any poem with chocolate in it is okay by me!

  22. Sweet Poem. Death by chocolate there is only one other way to go. Cheers Laurie

  23. Ah Death by Chocolate equals Williamsburg Virginia to me, but I am associative whereas you find sweet and sweeter and burst with ideas.

  24. it sure can… be murder, i mean (to the waistline if nothing else) – great poem

  25. Oh I’d be creative too…but yeah not in the right way, wondering how I’d fit it all in… very nice.

  26. A fun romp through death by temptation
The short bright flare instead of care
    Regretful deaths are short
but unfortunately, we often don’t die
    Ah carelessness!

  27. More like a conflagration than a spark. I really dig this. It’s clever and it’s beautiful as well.

  28. Laurie, you are a genius! Here is all the delight of dessert, all the taste of chocolate – and no calories :-)

  29. Laurie, you crack me up! You take the most practical facts of everyday life… eating too many sweets will make you fat… and you tighten the springs, lube the joints, gussy it up and create art. Well done!

  30. Somehow, and not in a bad way at all for she is one of my favorite authors, this reminds me of Agatha Christie!

She would have loved this poem!

  31. Yes, desert with all its richness can be fatal. Still sweets retain its place in any cuisine! Nicely Laurie!

    Hank

  32. I like how you played with the letters to create the title. I’ve notice several poets tend to create new words by playing with them. Me not so much.

  33. really liked the roller coaster of possible meanings in these last few lines,

    “another bite of neck-up hype,
a silly gripe when pants pop

    open to get a fill
    oh, the thrill–
    dessert can be murder.”

really cute, and kinda sexy ;-) thanks so much laurie

  34. Reminds me to have a Sunday treat!
