TV Multitask

GeminIs multitask? Do two things at once? Like twins? Not, me.

No, I can’t
sit five feet
from the TV–
which is where
I cook my words,
a square nook
like Lois Lane’s
cubicle, so small
I sometimes
suffocate from
dog dander, where
mine sleep
two feet away–
and concentrate

…as rehearsed lines zip through the air, WaVe into
my spongy brain… damn Squidward’s done it again…

the seesaw
volume
from show
to ads
a sub-lim-in-al
deficit,
sugar highs
and lows
that stuff
my Cocoa Puff
mind blind…
exercise my psyche
… I just did
twenty
push-ups,
okay?

No, I definitely can’t multi-task.

  1. ha smiles.. i prefer doing one thing at a time as well…the young generation seems to be really good with multitasking, doing hundred things at the same time, switch faster than i can look…on the other hand i also think they miss out on things.. the brain seems to work in a different way.. i like the Cocoa Puff
    mind …smiles

  2. twenty push ups might put a dent in the cocoa puffs…ha…minesweeper…oy i have not played that in years….love the lois lane ref…squidward & sponge bob will def jack you up…lol….this was a trip…love the quick lines as well…nice write laurie

  3. “Cook my words” that line – thought- I love it.

I like this! :) Nice job

  4. My daughter does this quite easily ~ I find that when everything is happening at once, I get confused, seesawed and blind ~ Good one Laurie ~

  5. No you can’t…who can write, while it is on? Much less think…

  6. Good points made here, Laurie. Hard to do something else (well) while the TV is blaring. I DO manage sometimes though IF I simply tune out the tube.

  7. The rapid subject changes in this piece are a brilliant image of the fast-paced way some people try to live their lives. I do wonder whether, in all the helter-skelter, hurly-burly rush of trying to do everything at once, anybody actually enjoys anything anymore.

  8. “a sub-lim-in-al
    deficit,”
finely protested in the very terms implanted by its presence! Totally Lois Lane, controlled, yet powerful.

Lots of images, shuffled, cut and well-dealt.

  10. So playful… love this!

  11. Laurie, I love the references to today’s programming as well as that of the past….well done ..I could feel the stress ;)

  12. ..me too..it’s either i will stop doing current stuff to do the other or will shout & walk out…lol… smiles…

  13. I do multitask in front of the TV. Television noise can be very disruptive when one is trying to concentrate on doing something properly, even just being within hearing shot of one. Ads in particular, are especially loud, very insistent as they are. If only there was an automute function for every time commercials come on.

  14. haha, love this. Cocoa puff mind blind….even brought in squidward, favorite character from Spongebob…multitasking, what life that word has taken on the past ten years or so. Great response Laurie. Thanks

  15. Amazing how many exciting passages you got into this. Love:-

    the seesaw
    volume
    from show
    to ads
    a sub-lim-in-al
    deficit,
    sugar highs
    and lows

  16. Funny! Keep doin’ them push-ups!

  17. I’m old school; rather do one thing and do it right than a bunch of things half right. Like my old man used to say, “Son, you ain’t really slow, and you ain’t really fast; you’re just half fast.”
    Love this poem!

  18. I like the way you structured your poem to match the pace and distractions of the modern world. Good poem.

  19. this is great fun, Laurie! and easy slip out of the lips. Now, I’m off to do my pushups (10)

  20. What a joy this was to read, light and funny. I can relate!

  21. Laurie, I laughed out loud at the phrase, “my Cocoa Puff mind.” This is a sly one, and so are you! Amy

chewing gum and talking is about the closest I get. As for the tv, we have a very exclusive relationship.

    I enjoyed this piece.
