The Promise

Sunset by Kelvin

Sunset by Kelvin

Beneath a barren tree she waits
No breath to call her own
No seed to nourish;
Only a tear.

Washed away, the salty drop
Takes flight upon a gush of wind.

Her hands caress the brittle bark
So much they bleed.
To her knees, she rubs them
In velvet; an emerald glow
Gives birth to new hope.

With a child’s energy,
Her eyes color the sky tangerine;
Tomorrow’s promise of new life
A surge of warmth within.

  1. From barrenness to birth – a hope filled poem and wonderful interpretation of the painting, Laurie! K

  2. trees give me hope
from a sunset to a new dawn
    tender poem

  3. This is beautifully expressed. A colorful sunset IS a sign of a hopeful tomorrow indeed!

  4. ..the promise of new life… new beginnings… new chance to love and be loved… ah, i am glad to read a favorable justice in the end Laurie… liked the image of her you formed or rather painted ‘neath the barren tree… it gives an entirely different shape, a rather improvement to the original elements present in the artwork… and you made it your own now… thank you… felt & enjoyed piece… smiles…

  5. love that amidst the barrenness new life sprouts…her child-like energy coloring the sky tangerine… and how that tear goes on a journey…

  6. she rubs them in velvet…that line jumped out at me laurie….love the redmption in the end as well…returning to the child, painting it vibrant….i like this much…smiles….lots of feeling in it…

  7. Beautiful response to this picture, which is awesome. You and Kelvin make a great team. It made me think about what it feels like to be pregnant again after having a miscarriage.

  8. stunning imagery with colors birthing. exciting!

  9. Nicely done, Laurie..even from a lonely barrenness are things reborn. A poetess alone is self-inspirational.

  11. love how you introduce the color of hope here

  12. Her hands caress the brittle bark
    So much they bleed.

What excellent lines – expectation, hope, desire and anticipation wrapped up in pure velvet. Really Really Great.

  13. So much to say with this one but it is the line: “Her eyes color the sky tangerine” that spoke to me the most. I cannot really explain why but that is the image from the art and your words that reached the deepest.

We don’t always have to understand why right?

    Well spun Laurie :)

  14. From
no breath to call her own

  17. A surge of warmth within. Great capture of the second that colorful sun touches the scene painted on your page. A very good mix of poem and painting.

She waits….and faith and hope bring her through ;)

  19. Fantastic mood creation. I must say, up to now, all the paintings and poems have been dark, lonely, sad (including mine). Hmmm, I wonder what this says about Kelvin’s art?

  20. Wuthering Heights beckon and I see Cathy there.

  21. I love your way of bringing the color from the painting into your words. Very emotionally provocative. Well done!

  22. With a child’s energy…loved that…some fantastic imagery in this one, word weaver! Love it

  23. Such colors and textures. Rubbing the hands in velvet– I think of moss. Lovely possibility. K.
